Top 5 Tips for Maintaining Your Pool Cartridge Filter

Rating & reviews (0 reviews)
Everybody loves swimming in sparkling clean pool water and your pool filter has the important job of maintaining pristine results by keeping the water free or dirt and debris. If you have a cartridge filter, it’s important that you carry out regular maintenance to ensure the filter can do its job properly. Let’s take a look at our top tips for maintaining your cartridge filter.

Clean your cartridge element regularly

Although cartridge filters tend to be easier maintenance than sand filters, you still need to make sure you remember to clean the cartridge element. You should make sure you clean your cartridge filter elements at least every two months, or more frequently if necessary. If you’re finding the dirt is cycling back into the pool or you notice increased pressure on the pool filter, your cartridge element probably needs cleaning.

Don’t scrub your cartridges

Damaged pleats on your cartridge element means that it won’t filter the water as effectively so don’t damage them by getting out the stiff scrubbing brushes. Instead, all you need to do is hose off the cartridge to remove dirt – just don’t use a high pressure hose! You can also soak your cartridge overnight to get rid of dirt and debris. At Pool Assist we can help by giving them a professional clean in a degreasing solution then a mild acid bath.

Have a spare cartridge element

To extend the life of your cartridges, it’s a good idea to have a spare cartridge element on hand so you can swap them around each time to clean. This also means your pool will be back up and running straight away, instead of you having to wait until your cartridge element can be put back into the filter.

Replace your cartridge element

Remember to keep an eye on your cartridge element to see if they need replacing. Generally, you’ll need to replace your cartridge filter every three to five years. Signs that your cartridges need replacing include a high pressure reading even after you’ve cleaned it, cracked or chipped end caps, damaged pleats which are frayed or ripped, flattened pleats which restrict water flow, and crushed cartridges.

Organise expert servicing

Whether you want regular fortnightly servicing, or need someone to check over your pool equipment once or twice a season, professional maintenance can help ensure that your cartridge filter runs smoothly. A certified technician will be able to identify any issues and address them then and there – after all, repairs are much cheaper to deal with than full replacements!
