The Skoda Rapid 2018 variants including the Spaceback offers some of the best value propositions in the Australian car market. For a small car, the Rapid range has a lot to offer as a small family car for those that don’t want to compromise on features. Sadly, the Rapid is only offered in a single variant here, the 1.4 TSI hatch and this is paired with a seven speed dual clutch auto transmission. The new specifications have been released, let’s take a closer look at what this has to offer so that you can make a more informed purchasing decision.

The Skoda Rapid Specification

The Skoda Rapid is offered as standard now with some fantastic features, such as sports seats, privacy glass, sports pedals, a sports steering wheels, ambient lighting, automatic b-xenon headlights, an auto dimming rear view mirror, rain sensing wipers and 17” alloy wheels.

Inside you can find some great touches, such as a 6.5” multimedia touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, vocal control features, USB ports, an SD card slot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, a digital DAB+ radio and a six speaker surround sound system.

The Skoda Rapid is also well equipped from a safety perspective with features, such as a driver fatigue warning, six airbags, cruise control, a rearview camera with rear parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitoring system, front assist braking, and a city emergency brake.

Under the Bonnet

The Skoda Rapid has a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine that generates 92kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The Rapid is front wheel drive, and the power is delivered via a seven speed DSG gearbox. The engine and gearbox play well together, gear changes are smooth, and the progression feels even.

The Skoda Rapid in Australia

The Skoda Rapid is offered in Europe in a Liftback configuration which is sedan like with a boot that acts like a hatch in certain respects. This particular car has never been a great seller for Skoda, and so we have never seen it here in Australia. However, since the introduction of the Skoda Rapid at the start of Q3 in 2014 sales have been gaining ground slowly. Skoda as a brand is still an unknown quantity for many Aussie drivers, and this is reflected in the slower sales progression.

In the future, Skoda Australia has made a strong case for a more competitive car to sell. It seems like the new Skoda Rapid may be the car that breaks into the Australian market in a big way. The Toyota Corolla is the current leader in this sales segment, and there is plenty of competition from other car manufacturers too. The next generation Rapid could take a big bite out of these sales if the early sketched of the Vision RS Concept are anything like the finished car. We can expect to see a sporty Rapid RS version at some point in the future, and we hope to see that car here.
