The Modern Electronic Cigarette: Taking the World by Storm

After many years of gorging cigarette smoke, Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik grew tired of the habit, namely because of the incessant coughing and health maladies that came in tow. In 2001, while Hon was in the midst of a nicotine patch regimen, he came up with a truly novel idea.

At the time, he was conducting experiments on a personalised console to glean the effects of vaporisation when introducing various food additives as solvents. He endured quite a bit of trial and error before stumbling upon the concept of piezoelectric ultrasound elements, which are capable of vaporising natural additives to deliver nicotine in the form of a smoke-like mist (or vapour). Shortly thereafter in 2003, Hon filed the first-ever patent for what we now know as the modern electronic cigarette, but as you might imagine, this technology has come quite a long way since its humble beginnings more than a decade ago.

The E-Cig of Today

Most of the modern iterations of electronic cigarettes are comprised of three components shown below:

  • Battery: Although e-cigs started out by using Hon’s patented ultrasonic technology, the vast majority of e-cigs nowadays are powered by a rechargeable lithium battery.

  • Chamber: Also referred to as the cartridge, this component provides a durable container for storing the actual e-liquid. The chamber tends to be the most aesthetically-pleasing part of an e-cig, which is why many people go out of their way to find a personalised variant.

  • Atomizer: The atomizer draws power from the battery and transforms the e-liquid into a vapour by way of a heated coil that sits in the primary chamber.

After pressing the activation button, the user will hear a slight bubbling noise and within a few seconds the e-liquid will turn into vapour. The user can subsequently inhale the vapour by bringing the mouthpiece up to his or her lips, mimicking the same exact motion of smoking a traditional cigarette. However, there is no flame, no ash, no smoky smell, no carbon monoxide, and no tar. More importantly, e-cig users don’t have to worry about the 4,000+ dangerous chemicals found in tobacco.

Dumping the Bad Habit

As you can see by now, modern e-cigs can help you recreate the repetitive habit of lighting a cigarette, bringing it to your mouth, and puffing the smoke, but it has been scientifically proven to be far healthier and less demanding than smoking a traditional filter cigarette. As a result, many people are beginning to turn to electronic cigarettes not only for the incredible assortment of flavours and additives, but also as a way to finally quit smoking once and for all. Since e-liquids provide a nice hit to the throat and varying levels of nicotine, smokers no longer have to go cold turkey just to kick the habit. They can quell their oral fixation and nicotine requirements by purchasing a cost-effective e-cig online.

Therefore, if you’d like to avoid the prospect of developing COPD or lung cancer from cigarette smoke, it’s in your best interests to make the electronic shift, as it were. Your throat, lungs, and heart will thank you one day.
