The History of Window Cleaning

Since windows were first around, there has been a need for window cleaning sydney.

It is unknown when or where glass was first made however it is believed that it could date as far back as the second millennium in BC somewhere in ancient Egypt. It was most certainly not as common as it is today and was considered to be extremely special.

The artform of blowing glass came out later in the 1st century of BC and was slowly introduced into mass production sometime around the 19th century which then was manufactured into windows being used for many houses and commonly used buildings during this era.

At first, windows were cleaned by house wives and servants using a simple bucket of water and a rag, but once the demand for more glass increased due to the growth of construction somewhere during 1850-1860 the demand for a professional window cleaner began to rise.

During the early 1900’s someone in the USA created a squeegee to make window cleaner, easier and faster. It was heavy and required multiple screws to be able to change the window cleaning blades. This idea originated in Chicago and was later adopted around other parts of the country, it was created using fisherman tools that they would use to scrape scales and to gut fish from the wharf where the boats would arrive.

Somewhere in 1930 - 1940 a migrant from Italy named Steccone created what we know today as a rubber squeegee. This was a light object with only one rubber blade which allowed for greater flexibility when cleaning windows.

This gentleman's name is Ettore and his product manufacturing company is still the leading producer of premium windows cleaning equipment in today's era.

The modern squeegee was the tool that all windows cleaners preferred to use up until 1993 when a completely new and innovative system was launched. This was the water fed pole system that was introduced in the early 90’s and completely changed the way window cleaners would be able to provide the services forever. Utilising water tanks to provide clean water through poles that were long and able to access hard to reach areas, with a brush to clean dirt and dry the windows almost without effort and leaving a naturally clean and clear finish with no streaks or marks.

In most cases these water fed poles are made from glass or carbon fibre and can reach significantly higher places for residential, commercial or strata window cleaning whilst being able to be positioned safely on the ground to complete the work without having to work in high risk situations hanging from the building. This system not only provides additional safety to the professional window cleaner but it also keeps the windows much cleaner and for a longer period of time.

As long there are windows, there will always be a need for window cleaning.
