The Anxiety & Depression Association of America found that approximately 18% of the population, 18 and up suffer from anxiety-related disorders. Out of that category, only about 36.9% are helping themselves with treatment. The numbers explode on the corporate front, where about 83% of US workers say that they experience some form of work-related stress. You can only imagine how large the percentages are on a worldwide scale.
The most difficult thing about anxiety is that it’s often caused by uncontrollable factors––like a high-pressure environment. From work to school, there are huge expectations placed upon functioning members of society, causing people to crumble under the weight of stress.
If you’re suffering––or suspect that you may be––from anxiety, don’t ignore it. Try these self-help tips to help you understand where your anxiety may be coming from and what you can try doing to overcome it. However, if you feel like you need professional help, please do consider seeing a therapist.
The Root of Anxiety
The urban society is built upon competition, where the only way to survive is to get ahead and not get left behind.
High expectations are placed upon babies upon inception. It’s common for parents to bestow big dreams upon their children––the world is competitive, after all. But those expectations only swell over the years, from talking and walking as early as possible to learn how to read and count as early as possible to getting ahead of the generation by skipping a few years of school to graduating from an Ivy League with honors to landing a prestigious job, and to retiring early.
It’s easy to brush anxiety off as a mental disorder that people who suffer from it just have to deal with because it’s so common nowadays. That is until you realize that even the youngest members of society––children as young as ten––are ending their lives from the burden of the pressure placed on their shoulders. High-pressure environments are everywhere, starting from the household, trickling into school and work, causing anxiety to flow even to toddlers.
The First Step
Likewise, there’s a difference between passion and pouring your entire life into a job until you burn out and never see the passion in what you’re doing ever again. Even the most coveted jobs in the world––from being an ESPA Esport athlete to a digital fashion designer––can be highly stressful, especially since the environment is naturally full of competition.
