The Skoda Rapid is an excellent family car with a definite focus on safety. In recent years we have seen many car manufacturers using ISOFIX anchor points. This is a growing global trend and the new standard for keeping children safe in cars. Despite this, there are still a lot of misconceptions about what ISOFIX is and how to use this technology in your car. Let’s take a closer look at this issue and answer some common questions that people have.
The Adoption of ISOFIX
It’s true that Australia was actually quite a late adopter of the ISOFIX standard. The merits of child safety capsules were long understood, but it was only recently that Australia relented and accepted the obvious benefits of this safety technology. In fact, it was actually illegal to even sell ISOFIX capsules here until 2014, and many imported cars sold here were deemed to be incompatible. In many ways, we are still playing catch up, and so it isn’t surprising that many Australian drivers don’t understand ISOFIX at all.
What is ISOFIX?
This is a product standard that has been generally applied globally for the safe fitting of child safety capsules (seats) in cars. There is a universal mounting system that is interchangeable across different car manufacturers and models. Every new car using ISOFIX has to conform to this standard and so do the child capsules. This means that every ISOFIX safety capsule will fit in every ISOFIX equipped car.
How Does ISOFIX Work?
Each ISOFIX safety capsule has a pair of clasps at the rear of the base section. These clasps connect to a metal hooped bracket that is fastened to the cars crash structure. The brackets and bars that the capsule is attached to are hidden out of sight under the seats. If you prise back the seat cushions, you can see them clearly. When you want to fit a capsule into the car, you just remove a pair of plastic bracket covers, position the capsule over the brackets and then push down slowly until the clasps lock. There is a quick release system, so it’s super simple to remove the capsule at any time. The ISOFIX anchor points in sedans are usually located under rear window and on hatches or wagons they are often positioned at the rear of the seat.
