Scaling:
While proper home care is the first step in maintaining oral health, it is essential to have professional cleanings every six months, or more frequently depending on the need. A dentist uses special instruments to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from those hard to reach areas and reinforces proper preventive home care techniques. These visits should be maintained at least every six months to insure that periodontal health (that of the gums) is maintained. During these visits the dentist also performs an exam of the entire mouth to insure that oral health is properly maintained.
Sealants:
One key component of oral health prevention is protecting the deeply grooved teeth in the back of the mouth. These deep grooves and fissures are susceptible to sticky foods and bacteria and can form cavities. Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. Sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.
Digital x-ray:
Digital X-ray is the latest technology used to take dental X-rays. Digital radiography is an X-Ray technology that eliminates film. You’ll immediately see a digital X-Ray image on a large-screen computer, very near the chair you’re sitting in.
But even more important, digital x-ray exposes you to up to 80-90 percent less radiation than traditional film X-Rays do hence, much safer than the old technology. Dental X-rays are essential diagnostic tools that provide information not visible during a dental exam. Dentists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden problems and complete an accurate treatment plan.
The large images, combined with tools that enable me to highlight potential problem areas on the screen so you can see them, enable you to understand just what I’m talking about.
In my practice, you’re directly involved in treatment planning, so you know just what to expect.
Fluoride
Used as a topical agent, fluoride actually has the ability to re-mineralize areas of teeth that have begun to decay, and halt further progression of disease. Fluoride is present in toothpaste, and can be applied in higher dosages in varnish and gels by a dental professional.
Mouth Guards
Custom-made mouth guard fitted by our dentist provides superior protection for those who participate in high contact sports, leisure and recreational activities. It effectively reduces the impact of blows to the face that would otherwise cause oral injury. Mouthguards are also a beneficial device for adults and children who suffer from teeth grinding/clenching (also known as bruxism), which can lead to temporomandibular or TMJ disorders. When worn at night, a custom-made mouthguard protects teeth from further breakdown and damage. We make custom made mouth guards in any colour you like.
