Pool Cleaning for Beginners: What You Need to Know

Rating & reviews (0 reviews)
If you’re new to pool ownership, you’re probably excited about the prospect of cooling off in the summer months and entertaining around the pool! Although there’s a lot of fun to be had when you have a pool, you also need to learn how to maintain it so you can avoid issues and keep the water clean and healthy. Today, we’re sharing our top tips for beginners on how to keep your pool clean.

Remove Debris

One of the most basic jobs you need to do to keep your pool clean is to remove any leaves or debris from the pool. If you don’t keep on top of it, it not only destroys the look of your pool but it can also lead to algae infestations and unbalanced chemicals. Get into the habit of scooping your pool regularly, and emptying your skimmer basket. If you’re sick of collecting debris, consider a pool cover to keep your water leaf free.

Check the Water Level

An essential task is to ensure your pool water level never falls too low.  if the water level falls below the skimmer box there is a significant risk that your pump will run dry.  Not only will this potentially damage the pump  but can in turn lead to other issues such as a green pool due to the lack of circulation.

Look after your filter

Your filter has the important job of removing dirt and debris from your water and getting the crystal clear results you love. To make sure your filter keeps your water as clean as possible, you need to maintain it correctly. For a sand filter, backwash at least monthly and increase this in the warmer weather. For a cartridge filter, keep an eye on build-up and hose it off as necessary. Remember, an overloaded filter often means a cloudy pool!

Check the chemical balance

Keeping your pool clean isn’t just about that water looking great – you also need to make sure your pool is healthy and safe to swim in. With that in mind, you need to ensure that your pool’s pH is between 7.2 and 7.6 for optimal swimming conditions. If you’re new to water testing, just bring a sample of your water along to your local pool shop and they’ll tell you what you need to do!

Organise professional servicing

The best piece of advice we can give is to organise professional cleaning and servicing of your pool. This doesn’t mean you need to arrange for expert cleaning once a month (although you can if you want!) but it’s a good idea to organise it for at least the beginning and end of the swimming season. Your pool technician can get your pool up to standard, as well as giving you helpful tips so you can continue the maintenance yourself.
