We expect lots of services from our body throughout our life and in return our body too demands some precautionary therapies to protect body from wear and tear so that it can work hard each and every day in our life.

Massage has been used as one of the oldest forms of therapy in ancient medical practices. Massage can be defined as the treatment of the soft tissues of the body either manually or mechanically. Massage therapy enhances your life by dropping stress, improving blood circulation and flushing out toxins and improving your immune system. And one of the best-known types of body massage is Swedish massage.

Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling at the University of Stockholm. Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology, as opposed to energy work on "meridiens" or sen lines in Asian massage systems. The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones and rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

Swedish massage is extremely advantageous for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility and reducing tension. Swedish massage flushes out the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes that relieve muscular strain. Swedish massage is also very helpful in reducing stress levels and is suggested in a regular program for stress management.

According to a study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and published in The New York Times, found that participants who received a 45-minute Swedish massage experienced significant decrease in levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as arginine vasopressin-a hormone that regulates blood pressure and water retention.

Swedish massage techniques include long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.

1. Effleurage: - Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs or fingertips.
2. Petrissage: -Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs or fingers.
3. Friction: - Circular pressures with the palms of hands, thumbs or fingers.
4. Vibration: - Oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate the body.
5. Percussion: - Brisk hacking or tapping.
6. Inactive and active movements: - It includes bending and stretching.

Before and during Swedish therapeutic massage session, it is advisable to communicate with the massage therapist so that massage can be customized according to one’s specific needs.
