Parasitic diseases in humans: An overview
Parasites are tiny organisms that live in the bodies of other organisms, including animals, birds, and humans. Some parasites can grow, reproduce, and invade the host body, causing parasitic infections that can be severe and even life-threatening. However, not all parasites are harmful. For many years, parasitic infections have been a significant cause of death worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The disease affects people of all ages and genders, presenting a significant public health concern. To combat this issue, public health departments must take swift action to prevent the spread of infections and eliminate the infection from the endemic regions.
Transmission of Parasitic Infections:
The primary way parasitic infections spread is by consuming undercooked or raw meat or fish. Some infections can also be transmitted to humans through direct or close contact with animals, birds, or their excrement. Additionally, parasitic infections can be transmitted through insect bites from mosquitoes, ticks, flies, etc.
Types of Parasitic Infections:
Parasitic infections are caused by three primary organisms: protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites. The following are some of the common parasitic diseases that affect humans:
Protozoal infections:These include malaria, cryptosporidiosis, amoebiasis, leishmaniasis, giardiasis, and Chagas disease (caused by Trypanosoma)
Helminth infections:Ascariasis, enterobiasis, and trichuriasis are examples of helminth infections
Ectoparasitic diseases:These include scabies, pediculosis, filariasis, and Lyme disease.
