It is always our goal to keep plants in transit as short as possible, and it is very important to open your plants as soon as possible when they arrive. Choose a pot
Once your plants are completely drenched, it's time to choose the right pot size. Choose a pot that is as small as possible. A common misconception is to plant in large pots, thinking that the plants will grow faster because they have a bigger pot. Actually, the truth is quite the opposite. Plants need oxygen in the soil, and large pots make it difficult for the soil to dry out. Without drying the soil freezes and oxygen is lost. Roots will not develop properly and the plant will be too wet, which is a major cause of root rot and possibly plant death.
Smaller plants with smaller root systems should go in pots with 50 mm tubes. Small shoots with large root systems or large taproots, such as most cycads and some palms may not fit in a 50 mm tube. These types of plants are kept in tubes called 'native tubes' which are very long, but still only 70 mm wide. These native tubes are the pots we use the most in our nurseries, they are very useful for many palms and cycads.
Soil and pot mix
Always choose a well-drained mixture. For potted plants, the easiest (and often the best) soil is premium potting mix, available from hardware stores, nurseries and garden centers. Read the back of the bag to make sure it's right for your plants and check if the potting mix includes fertilizer and soil conditioner or if you need to add it yourself.
Things like seaweed slurry, dynamic lifters, organic additions, etc. are also great for adding to soil. Be sure to read the packaging for the correct amount of solution or fertilizer.Some plants, such as azaleas, gardenias, and camellias, prefer more acidic soil than others. This plant will require a specific potting mix, or you will need to adjust the pH of the potting mix to suit this plant. Sweet soil can kill these plants, or stunt their growth.
Give Water
It is important to water your plants well. If you don't do any of the others, please do so, this is the most important thing about potted plants. Without proper watering, there will be air pockets in the soil or pot mix, causing the roots to die back or die completely. Water the well, then allow the soil to dry out to oxygenate the roots.
Placing the plants
Reading as much information as possible about the plants you buy, it is very important to find out what they like and what they don't. All plants have different needs, just like people.
When you get your plants, you will need to gradually settle them in the spot where they will eventually grow.
