Window Blinds are one of those extensively exposed assets that need frequent cleansing. While a simple swiping with a wet cloth can help remove temporary impurities, they do need extensive cleansing session occasionally. Blinds of several types are available and thus the most appropriate remedy to maintain each one of them varies with the material and its durability. Here is a simple DIY guide to effectively clean outdoor window blinds.
Cleaning Vertical Blinds
Vertical Blinds are the easiest to clean. The same can be achieved with simple swiping with detergent water. Prepare 2 buckets of warm water. Get a cleaning tool preferably a sponge brush with a handle. Put detergent in one bucket and soak the tool.
Clean them manually
Use a separate wet cloth to swipe before using the tool. Get the tool and clean the slats. Check for colour fastness by testing the cleansing on a smaller area. Properly yet gently swipe the slats with the cloth. Put a towel or another cloth in the lower slat to avoid the dirt droplets spoil the lower body of the blind and the floor. Thus, always begin from the top most slate.
After every slate, rinse the tool in the second bucket and again soak it in the detergent bucket.
In the end, leave the blind to dry. You may also apply a separate towel or any other thick cloth for manually removing any leftover droplets and moisture.
Cleaning Venetian Blinds
Venetian Blinds are magnetic to dirt. Plus, if they are exposed to the exterior as outdoor window blinds, the need to cleanse them every week becomes important. Just cleaning them with a simple wet cloth (as we did with Vertical Blinds) will not help. It is imperative that they are dissembled. Better seek professional help if you are not expert with screwdrivers.
Bath tub Therapy
The best way to clean Venetian Blinds is the bath tub therapy. Get all the slats and clean them with a dry cloth. Put them all in the tub filled with warm water. Abandon them in the tub for a few minutes to half an hour.
Now, drain the dirt water and put on the shower discharging warm water. Take a brush or a thick cloth and use detergent to clean the slats. Again, put them in a smaller tub with lukewarm water.
You may dry manually with a cloth or put them in the sun.
Some generic tips
This was just a glimpse of the some procedures to clean 2 of the most extensively used Window blinds. Besides, some dos and don’ts have to be taken care of for the blind itself.
Using Vacuum cleaner is fine but the motion of the front brush should be specific. Always clean in the horizontal position across the slates and not against them. Also, wooden blinds should not be treated with excessive water as it can leave moisture and discolour them.
Last and not least, ensure safety by using gloves and not letting the detergent contact your eyes.
