Diving and Snorkeling Masks and Goggles

Rating & reviews (0 reviews)
When you enjoy any sport you need to have the right gear, whether you compete or just like to do something for fun. When you like to scuba or snorkel you need a snorkel or diving mask and other equipment to ensure it is a good experience and that you are safe. Take your time when choosing your equipment and you can avoid irritation, not being able to see or breathe, and worse. The mask especially is important, it is your window to the world below the surface of the water and airspace must be created. When you are in water deeper than three meters that airspace needs to be equalized so that the mask does not squeeze on your face. The nose needs to be enclosed so you are able to exhale and equalize. If a mask only covers the eyes and does not cover the nose this is not one you can dive deep in, it is for surface use because you cannot equalize that mask.

What to look for in a diving mask

The lenses of the mask are known as a faceplate and then there is the head strap and the skirt. Masks though come in different shapes and styles and sizes so you need to consider what is comfortable for you. You can get oval-shaped masks and diving goggles and more. Masks tend to be made from one of two materials, Neoprene rubber or silicone. Rubber tends to be black and silicone tends to be translucent. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Rubber is more affordable than silicone and if you are just snorkeling it tends to be good enough and the black color is better so there is no light reflection and glare issues. Silicone on the other hand while more expensive tends to be more comfortable to wear and is certainly more durable. They are better for scuba diving as a result especially down at certain depths.

Features to explore in a diving mask

When you are looking at diving goggles or masks to buy whether for snorkeling or diving there are a few things you should look for to get ones that meet your needs the best. These features include;
  1. A good seal when they are on and skirting that fits close to your face and is comfortable.
  2. For diving lower than three meters you want nose pockets that mean you can equalize as you descend.
  3. A good field of vision so you can enjoy the experience you have under the water.
  4. Lenses made from tempered glass as they are safer should they break as there is a lot less chance of them shattering into small pieces and causing serious injury.
  5. A low profile mask so that they are easier to equalize because there is less air trapped to do so.
  6. A comfortable head strap that is adjustable and is easy to lock in position. You want to avoid less expensive masks that have fused straps as if they tear at all the mask becomes completely useless.
