Best places to go on an island holiday in Australia

Looking to get some TLC on your upcoming summer break? Nothing says rest and relaxation like a holiday on an island. In this article, we’ll break down our favourite island retreats in Australia.

(1) Fraser Island

Love sun, sand, and sea? There’s no better place on the east coast to go on holiday than Fraser Island. As the world’s largest sand island at over 120 kilometres in length, you’d think that it would have been overtaken by developers by now.

Fortunately, much of this paradise is under the umbrella of Australia’s national park system, keeping much of it wild and pristine. While its coast is often threatened by deadly jellyfish and sharks, it contains fresh water lakes in its interior that are safe for swimming in any season.

As you travel this isle’s sandy roads, keep an eye open for dingoes and the wreck of the SS Maheno. If you prefer on-foot travel, there are plenty of trails as well, the best of which is the Fraser Island Great Walk.

Back at the camp site, after your kids have gone to bed, keep yourself busy with a spot of online gaming. With good mobile connectivity, you’ll be able to access a number of sites, including those that take cryptocurrency.

Some of them allow Aussies, allowing you to take your stash of bitcoin and spin it up by playing blackjack, roulette, or card games like Caribbean Stud. So much for just playing Crazy 8’s while camping!

(2) Lord Howe Island

Sitting in the Tasman Sea 780 kilometres northeast of Sydney, Lord Howe Island is a piece of Polynesia every Australian ought to see in their lifetime. You need to plan a trip here carefully, though, as no more than 400 visitors are allowed on the island at any given moment.

However, jumping through these regulatory hoops is well worth the effort, as this special place is home to fragrant pine forests, abrupt mountains formed by extinct volcanoes, and gorgeous, yet blessedly empty beaches.

Need to unplug from the internet? There are no mobile towers here, making it easy to disconnect from the world outside, if only for a few days.

(3) Kangaroo Island

Want to connect with nature on your next holiday? Add Kangaroo Island to your list of potential destinations. Off the tourism radar until recently, this isle is famous for its population of kangaroos (hence the name), seals, and koalas.

It also has plenty of beaches, while cold, are largely devoid of people and offer great surf breaks. Not terribly athletic? Rent a stand up paddleboard and experience the waters off this underrated isle.

(4) Rottnest Island

No visit to Perth is complete without a journey to nearby Rottnest Island. While it is blessed with beautiful sandy beaches and a number of historical attractions, it is most famous for being home to one of the cutest marsupials in the world, the quokka.

While it is the subject of many selfies, do try to give these guys the space they deserve. That said, they are cute buggers, aren’t they?
