Benefits Of Height Adjustable Desks

The main problem with most desks is that they seem to require of us the complete opposite of our natural instincts – the human body, as a whole, is designed to be in motion and not to be sitting for extended periods of time. In actual fact, movement is essential for spinal health (it improves circulation and reduces muscle fatigue). This is where height adjustable desks come into play, as they allow us to sit or stand as required.

  1. Sitting Position
When you sit all day, even with a healthy (ergonomic) posture, your overall health starts to decline. A recent study, which focused on more than 73,000 women in the US, found that the risk of death from heart disease was nearly three times higher for those who sat the most (when compared with those who sat the least). The results are similar for heart disease amongst men who sit for extended periods.

  2. Standing Position
When you stand, pressure on the intervertebral discs in your lower back is fairly low (much lower than when you sit unsupported). This can help to avoid many back problems that develop as a result of sitting. Standing also uses about 20% more energy than sitting, so you will find that you tire more quickly when you stand instead of sit. This is not too much of a problem for those who work shifts as opposed to all day.

  3. Sitting & Standing
Alternating between sitting and standing positions is essential for keeping our bodies healthy and preventing illness. Regular movement actually adjusts the load being placed on our bodies and increases rest intervals for specific body parts, which therefore reduces the adverse effects of the associated risk factors on our bodies.

  4. Motion = Health
A body that is in motion is one that is healthy. Standing actually causes you to burn three times as many calories as are burnt whilst seated. A study has shown that you can burn an additional 340 calories a day if you spend just two hours of your workday standing (instead of sitting). This is great if you’re trying to lose a few kilograms.

The best thing about height adjustable desks is that they allow you to easily adapt a single desk to a wide variety of people (from those who are short to those who are tall, for example), instead of trying to adapt the workforce to one or two fixed workstations. This allows us to work using the body’s “neutral posture”, which is when our bodies are at their strongest and most efficient. You will also have more energy, reduced fatigue levels and reduced risk of injury.

People who don’t have the ability to get away from their workstations every hour or so will benefit enormously from the use of height adjustable desks, as it enables them to have a break from their static posture without needing to leave their work area. A business will also receive many benefits, including: increased productivity and savings on workers’ compensation expenses. They will also find that employees utilise less sick leave.
