The Skoda Rapid lineup will change in 2019 as the Czech car manufacturer adds a pair on new cars to the stable. Skoda will add a new compact SUV and a small hatch to fill out their already impressive stable of Rapid based cars. We expect these new cars to be available sometime after Q2 towards the middle of 2019. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve learned about these exciting new cars so far.
The Rapid Spaceback?
The Skoda Rapid Spaceback will be essentially split into these two new models. The Rapid moniker and nameplate will continue to be used on the small hatch variant, and the separate compact SUV may have a different name. These are two small wagons; they have been boosted with an elevated ride height and impressive wagon proportions compared to similar vehicles from other manufacturers. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback was always seeking to please disparate driver demographics interested in different aspects of the car. However, the new cars will be far more targeted towards specific car buyers, and they can also cash in on the latest compact SUV craze sweeping Australia and elsewhere.
The Evolution of Design
The new small hatch will be roughly equivalent in size to a Volkswagen Golf. The small crossover SUV will have serious crossover intentions moulded into a slightly smaller form factor. These two vehicles have been strongly hinted at in recent years through a series of interesting concept car reveals. The latest of these was the Skoda Vision X that we saw earlier in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show, and this is what the crossover SUV will be based on. The Vision RS concept car gave us an early glimpse at the design that the new Rapid small hatch may deliver on its release.
The Rapid Spaceback has already stretched the cabin space to its limit thanks to the confines of the MQB platform. However, the crossover SUV will have an even more compact option available. There will also be door edge protection that we’ve recently seen on the latest Skoda Kodiaq releases. The crossover is likely to have a new name to bring it into line with the Kodiaq and Karoq family.
Any News on a Release Date?
At the Paris Motor Show, Thomas Besson-Magdelain, the product manager for the Skoda Rapid Spaceback had a lot to say about these new car releases. Mr. Besson-Magdalain said “The new Spaceback will be approximately middle of next year” and he added “the crossover in September next year,” this seems to confirm the timing for the release of these two new Skoda models. At the moment we have received no word on an Australian release for these two Skoda Rapid variants. However, it’s still early days, and it’s possible that we will learn more about a release here early next year.
