Functions of kidneys
According to National Kidney Foundation, every second person in the world is suffering from one or the other kidney problem. Kidneys are bean-shaped organs responsible for the filtration of metabolic waste and fluid from the blood. It also handles other functions like regulating nutrients, balancing acids and initiating the red blood cell production in the body. If in case kidneys become damaged, the toxic waste starts accumulating in the body and can harm the organs.
What is chronic kidney disease?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slowly progressive disease which takes a certain time to reach to later stages. It is a silent but potentially deadly disease that's non-discriminating and can strike anyone at any time because of its affinity for going months or even years undetected. It often goes unchecked because the individual is unaware of the subtle symptoms of the disease until end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In this stage, 90% loss of kidney function and should be immediately diagnosed. Chronic kidney disease treatment is required to stop any further damage to the kidneys.
Causes of CKD
The most common causes of CKD are diabetic nephropathy, hypertension and glomerulonephritis. They have maximum contribute in causing chronic kidney disease among middle and old age patients. Other reasons like kidney stones, cancer or tumor, polycystic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome and bladder infection can cause kidney problem.
Signs and symptoms of CKD
Chronic kidney disease symptoms often are same like other illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and the flu. One feels tired and weak all the time, loss of appetite, sleeping disorder, difficulty concentrating, nausea and swelling in the feet, hands and ankles are just a few of the symptoms of this disease. Besides a patient may generally feel unwell while with advanced kidney disease one may experience accelerated atherosclerosis, accelerated bone loss (loss of calcium and phosphorus). They can also develop cardiovascular disease than the general population.
Common treatment techniques
The most common form of Chronic kidney disease treatment is dialysis and kidney transplant. Dialysis is an alternate to kidney functions when the kidneys are not functioning properly. However, dialysis is not a cure and doesn’t correct endorphin level. In a kidney transplant, the damaged kidney is replaced by a new donated kidney. These treatments are not a permanent solution but only expand the life of the kidneys
Kidney diet
People who suffer from kidney disease can rejoice-they won't have to worry about restricting the food intake or restrict the intake of sodium and protein in the daily diet. This diet helps ensure the rejuvenation of the kidneys. In addition, one should include fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet. One should strictly cut down alcohol and caffeine from the diet.
