1. Check the battery often
Electric mowers rely primarily on batteries as their main power source. They are also rather pricey to buy and replace. That's why proper battery maintenance is a critical component in electric mower maintenance.
- Go over the mower's user manual thoroughly and examine the battery care and maintenance sections.
- When you are storing the mower for a prolonged period, always remove the battery.
- Charge the battery fully first before using it if you did not use the mower for a while.
2. Store your mower properly
Always store your mower indoors after using it to prolong its life, even if you use it daily. Sun, rain and humidity will gradually eat their way through the mower's components no matter how tough its materials are. Most electric mowers have collapsible handles, which makes them more easy to store in small, compressed spaces.
3. Sharpen the blades
Spring is usually the mowing season. But before you have fun hacking away overgrown grass, you need to inspect the blades first. A dull blade can reduce the cutting efficiency of your mower. You'll know when it's time to sharpen the blades when it takes more time than usual to mow your lawn. If you want to sharpen the blades yourself, position the mower on its side and remove the blades to sharpen them. Be sure to wear thick safety gloves while removing the blades. If you're not comfortable doing this on your own, seek expert help from a professional lawn carer.
4. Clean the deck
Each time you use your mower, a large amount of grass and debris can accumulate inside its deck. This can gradually build-up and eventually clog your machine. To clean out the deck, you need to ensure that your mower is off first. Then turn your mower sideways and inspect how dirty the deck is. You should be able to clean out most of the residue and debris from the deck with a leaf blower or a garden hose. If there is a significant build-up that's very hard to remove, you can use a wire brush to scrub the deck clean. Again, always wear thick safety gloves whenever you're handling the blades or areas near the blades.
5. Check for any loose components
Lawnmowers create significant amounts of vibration each time they work. Over time, this can loosen up some of the parts and fasteners. You should check your mower's parts first if you're taking it out after storing it for a lengthy period. Ensure that all these parts are tight and secure. Use an appropriate tool if you see any loose parts and re-tighten them.
