1. Your pump is sucking in air
Your pump is meant to be watertight and if you have air leaks, this can lead to the pump overheating, drying up or seizing. One of the most common reasons that your pump is sucking in air is that the water level of the pool is too low – make sure the water is at least halfway up the skimmer box. It could also be caused by loose unions in the piping, the pump basket not being seated correctly, a small crack in your skimmer box, or holes in your automatic cleaner hose.
2. Your pump is noisy
You’ll know pretty quickly if your pump doesn’t sound right and the worst thing you can do is ignore it! If your pump sounds like it’s full of rocks, it could simply be vibrating against the ground and can be easily fixed by putting a rubber mat underneath it. If not, it might be cavitation which means the pump is starved of water and you’ll need to check for obstructions which are interrupting water flow. If your pump is making a screaming sound, your motor may need new bearings.
3. Your pump is leaking water
If you notice a water leak underneath your pool pump, it’s probably a pressure-side leak and could be the result of a deficient pump lid o-ring, mechanical seal failure, bad impeller housing o-ring, a loose pipe, or even a crack in the pump body. If the problem is an o-ring or pump lid seal, it’s pretty easy to fix yourself.
4. Your pump isn’t pulling in water
If your pump is on but the water’s not moving, the first thing to do is check your baskets to see if any debris is preventing the flow of water. If they’re clear, check the pump impeller as these can become clogged from time to time.
