Electric chainsaws are perfect for homeowners who have a yard full of plants and trees begging to be trimmed or cut down. Many kinds of trees have low hanging branches that need the occasional trimming, but if it's too big or thick then an axe or a pair of shears will not do much to solve your lawn problem. Using an electric chainsaw allows you to trim these limbs fast and easy. The wood can be processed into smaller chunks, and large trunks can be turned into lumber. For many homeowners, electric chainsaws are the solution to all their trimming and felling problems.

Electric chainsaws can be categorised according to their power sources: Corded Electric Chainsaws and Battery-powered Electric Chainsaws. Each type of electric chainsaw has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is important that you find out your needs so you can properly choose the right electric chainsaw for you.

As one can infer, corded electric chainsaws have to be plugged into a mains socket in order for it to function. The maximum range of the electric chainsaw is limited by the length of the power cord and the extension cable. Careful planning is required if one plans to clear an area using an electric chainsaw. However, corded electric chainsaws produce more power than their battery-powered counterparts, and are best used for general cutting and felling.

Meanwhile, battery-powered electric chainsaws rely on an inbuilt battery pack to power the tool. The absence of a power cord allows the user a practically unlimited degree of range and movement. While the battery pack affords users better range and mobility with their electric chainsaw, it also has one major disadvantage: The electric chainsaw can only function as long as the battery is charged. The electric chainsaw obviously can't function when the battery is flat. This makes the tool's use limited to short trimming and cutting. Battery-powered electric chainsaws are also less powerful than their corded cousins.

Battery-powered electric chainsaws are best suited for light tasks like trimming and cutting small trunks. A corded electric chainsaw, on the other hand, can be trusted for general tree work like tree felling and trunk processing.

A lot of people assume that electric chainsaws are a poor substitute for petrol chainsaws. Petrol chainsaws run on fossil fuels, which provide more power compared to electric chainsaws. However, no one really needs that much power in a chainsaw unless you're a professional worker. An electric chainsaw is perfectly adequate for most casual users and homeowners.

Here are a few more reasons why you need to get an electric chainsaw.

1. They're easier to maintain and use

Electric chainsaws come out of the box ready to cut through wood. You can't say the same for petrol chainsaws. Oiling the chains is practically the only prep work an electric chainsaw requires. It is also the only maintenance work you need to do since there's no engine to maintain and no petrol to mix and refill. Just charge the battery or plug the chainsaw in and it will roar to life in no time.

Petrol chainsaws require a lot of prep and maintenance work: Engines have to be primed, and cords have to be pulled (multiple times!) before a chainsaw can be used. Petrol chainsaws are also heavier due to the weight of the engine and the petrol tank. Electric chainsaws are lighter and definitely safer to use.

2. No petrol needed

Unlike petrol chainsaws, electric chainsaws don't require dirty fossil fuels to function. Since electric chainsaws are powered by electricity, recovery times are faster compared to their petrol counterparts.

When a petrol chainsaw runs of out of fuel, you can't just refill the tank and use it again. You have to shut the tool down first and wait for the components to cool down before it can be refuelled and used again. Electric chainsaws, on the other hand, just require electricity to run.

3. Easier on your ears

Chainsaws are notorious for being incredibly loud machines, so much so that you have to wear earmuffs while using one just to protect your hearing. Electric chainsaws produce less noise compared to their petrol-powered cousins. They're so quiet that you can use an electric chainsaw in neighbourhoods since your neighbours will barely hear the noise.
